Attachment Theory in Counseling

Welcome to the attachment theory in counseling workshop!

Attachment theory provides incredible insights into the foundations of our relationships and relationship and mental health challenges. Via our primary caregivers, we are taught in early childhood about the world, the safety (or lack thereof) of others, and whether we can rely on those we love to support us, nurture us, guide us and protect us. Importantly, this lays down neural pathways, and later on it is has a profound affect on our cognitive, emotional and social development.

It is for this reason that in counseling in an attachment-sensitive way, we are counseling most effectively. Practically, this means that we are aware of our own attachment history and needs, what our clients needs in this regard may be and how this plays out in the counseling relationship and any counseling interventions we engage in. Through attachment-sensitive counseling we can make a significant contribution to a client’s healing journey and overcoming long-term challenges.

This free, online, webinar workshop is designed to provide an introduction to attachment theory in counseling and how we can leverage attachment theory effectively in our counseling practice. Importantly, the lens through which this workshop will be delivered is that:

  • All humans exist on a continuum of attachment styles. We deeply value the uniqueness of each individual and their lived experiences. We avoid absolutes in terms of attachment style categories.
  • While direct physical abuse can seem like an obvious attachment wound, we do not believe that any childhood or parent is perfect and we believe that all of us can experience comfort and healing in understanding attachment theory.
  • Humans are dynamic and capable of profound change, and we believe that growing into a more secure attachment style through appropriate, evidence-based therapeutic modalities is possible.

Our hope is that you will leave this workshop with improved knowledge on:

  • Attachment theory and related concepts as it applies as a foundational concept in counseling.
  • Why attachment theory knowledge is vital to a therapeutic relationship and counseling interventions.
  • Providing corrective experiences in counseling for our clients.
  • Navigating ruptures and repairs as they pertain to the counseling relationship.
  • Tailoring our counseling interventions in ways that are attachment-sensitive.
  • Internal family systems theory and its relationship to attachment theory.
