Become a safe, effective support for trauma survivors

The South African Stress and Health Study (SASH) found that trauma exposure of the general population, in present day South Africa is approximately 78.3%. It is however still an incredibly isolating experience with trauma survivors often feeling confused and overwhelmed by what they experience psychologically and physically in the aftermath of a traumatic experience. There are often limited avenues of support and psycho-education available to trauma survivors. However, well-trained trauma counselors that are able to provide safe, effective and empowering trauma counseling can powerfully fill this gap and support trauma survivors on a recovery journey.

High quality training

“This course has helped me to effectively manage the traumatic experiences at the children’s home that I work with. I have also been able to take on more clients with trauma as the presenting challenge. I am now able to provide more in-depth psycho-education on the trauma responses to my clients which allows them to understand trauma more effectively. This is a once in a life time experience. It will allow you to see trauma in a different light and how delicate it is.

More people should know about this course!

It’s given me a wealth of knowledge to complete my honours degree and carry with me into my Masters degree in 2025. I feel that through this course, I was seen and given a chance to be a part of something bigger which has turned out to be so valuable to me. I’d love more people to know about this incredible course.

Practical and deeply empathetic

I have gained a comprehensive toolkit of practical techniques and strategies for effectively supporting clients through their trauma. I have learnt how to establish a safe and trusting environment through active listening and validation, and how to create a non-judgmental and empathetic space for clients to share their experiences. It is a comprehensive and structured approach to trauma counselling that is both practical and deeply empathetic.

Supportive and unique

“I feel more confident in my abilities. This course teaches us more and guides us more than normal courses, as Candice checks-in, provides guidance and supports us to trust ourselves. I would change nothing about this course.”

As a licensed counselor and yoga therapist that specialises in trauma and mental health, with a strong public health background, it’s important to me that this Short Course in Trauma Counseling is evidence-based, experiential, accessible and rooted in local context.

Evidence-based

This training progam is and will continue to be informed by current and world-class academic research in trauma, trauma-recovery and somatic approaches to trauma. Not all trauma counseling is created equal, and it’s important to study those methods proven in research and clinical trials to be safe and effective for trauma survivors. We ensure we do no harm in this way.

Experiential

It is hard, if not impossible, to facilitate from a place of little lived experience. It is for this reason that this training program also has a strong component of self-reflection, and practical hours training (including trauma counseling practice). This is a training program that will teach you about yourself too, and promote your own personal growth. From this foundation, you are able to start providing effective trauma counseling.

Accessible

We appreciate the difficulty some students may face in traveling to and attending training, both in terms of cost and personal care responsibilities. For this reason, our training is conducted entirely online. We have ensured the integrity of the training while ensuring it is as financially accessible to those that would like to attend. Every live theory class is recorded and will be available for viewing for the duration of the training program. So you are able to attend around your work schedule. Scholarships are also available periodically, please ensure you are following us on Instagram and are on our mailing list to be notified of these.

Rooted in local context

It is no surprise that South Africans are exposed to very high levels of trauma, this is higher than the global average. In this training, we are sensitive to the local context of our clients and their communities. We take international, world-class research and understand it through a local lens. This ensures effectiveness in our individual contexts, for our clients.
